Q: What causes a baby's fever? What should I do (or don't do) and when should I call the doctor?
A: Fever is one of the most common reasons parents consult their child's physician. The approach to fever in a child in the first three months of life is different than that of older children. A fever in a newborn is defined as a rectal temperature of 100.5 degrees or higher. The most common cause, like in older children, is a viral infection. However, in a newborn, a bacterial cause must be ruled out as this age group is more susceptible to this.
If a child in his first three months of life develops a fever, the parent should call the physician immediately. No medicine (including acetaminophen or ibuprofen) should be given. Your doctor will determine the best course of action.
