Q: What is the "soft spot"?

A:  The soft spot is an area of the baby's head located on the top, midline and slightly forward.  It is a normal diamond-shaped structure that is softer than the surrounding boney structures.  It is also called a fontanelle and is usually present for several months and up to 2 years of life.

The soft spot takes on added importance if it is tense or bulging, a sign of possible infection or increased pressure on the brain.  A depressed soft spot can be seen with dehydration.  If you have concerns about your baby's soft spot, please check with your pediatrician or family physician.
